COPRINUS COMATUS

Coprinus comatus

Very common edible mushroom that grows in meadows in the presence of calcareous soils rich in organic matter. The young and freshly picked coprini are a real delicacy and are much appreciated by the chefs of haute cuisine. It is a mushroom very rich in minerals and proteins with 20 amino acids including all the essentials.

– The most important medicinal property is the hypoglycemic property due to the high vanadium content and is useful in the treatment of type I and type II diabetes. It also contains a high amount of iron which balances the vanadium concentration. The fungus acts in two ways: on the one hand it improves pancreatic functionality with an action of stimulation, regeneration and protection of its cells, on the other hand it reduces insulin resistance, that is, it sensitizes the cells to the action of the hormone. Many mushrooms have hypoglycemic properties and a study compared the action of three mushrooms: Ganoderma lucidum , Grifola frondosa and Coprinus comatus. The results showed that the cover is superior to the other two. Clinical studies have verified that taking the mushroom reduces blood glucose by 41% after 90 minutes, after 3 hours the reduction persists by 30% and after 6 hours it is 20%. For people with diabetes, the administration of the mushroom as a food supplement if associated with the drug can lead to hypoglycemic conditions, so in this case it is recommended to use it under medical supervision.

– Metabolic disorders due to incorrect blood glucose regulation are one of the causes that favor overweight and obesity. Studies on laboratory animals have verified that the administration of the fungus can counteract the weight gain that often occurs in diabetic subjects. Furthermore, the polysaccharides of the mushroom are useful for reducing the state of inflammation deriving from metabolic decompensation. In association with Grifola frondosa and Pleurotus ostreatus, the coprino is a valid remedy useful for reducing overweight and can therefore be important to counteract the widespread Metabolic Syndrome.

– Coprinus comatus improves bowel function, promoting motility and blood circulation. The contribution of trehalose contained in the mushroom nourishes and invigorates the bacterial flora with a net benefit of intestinal activity. It is also effective in the treatment of hemorrhoids and in China Coprinus comatus has been used for centuries as a natural remedy to reduce inflammation.
